During the 1990s we find a clear turn toward literary motifs. Gullvåg begins to create painting-cycles in relation to novels by Knut Hamsun, Oscar Wilde and Joris-Karl Huysmans.
These pictures bear signs of solid preparation; Gullvåg invests great energy immersing himself in the novels, their authors, the “colour” of the era and other related material. The works are nevertheless difficult to categorize as illustrations. They are more like independent commentaries because they are filled with the artist’s own associations in relation to the material – and they offer the novels a supplementary, visual dimension.
